Frequently asked questions about GradeOptics, the AI-assisted grading service for paper exams. If your question is not here, write to support@gradeoptics.com.
No. The AI suggests a mark for each answer with its reason. Nothing reaches a student until someone on the course staff approves it, and each mark records who gave it.
Yes. Each answer is read from its box on the scanned page and shown beside the original, so you can check what was read. Clear handwriting is read best; an answer the AI cannot grade is marked for you to check by hand. See how GradeOptics grades handwritten exams.
No. Without a key, the AI writes an answer for each question and marks it as written by the AI, for you to check or change. A key gives marks closer to your own.
Written answers, multiple choice, select all that apply, true or false, fill in the blanks, matching, and sections where students answer any few of several questions. Mathematics is read as notation, and answers with drawings are graded with the picture of the answer. See the guides for computer science, math, and science exams.
Grading starts as soon as the scans are read. Three exams are graded first as a check, then every other student at the same time, and the work carries on when you close the tab.
No. Student work and rosters are used only to grade them for you, and the AI providers' commercial terms do not allow them to train on it. For US schools, GradeOptics acts as a school official under FERPA. Read the privacy policy.
Yes. Invite graders to a course by email. They can grade and approve, and only the instructor manages the course's staff and settings.
Yes, once you publish. Students sign in with the email on your roster, see their approved grades and their graded exam, and can ask for a regrade, which you answer in one place.
Not directly. Approved grades export as a CSV file, with each student's identifier, their scores, and the total.
The steps keep Gradescope's names, and the AI does each one first. See GradeOptics as a Gradescope alternative.
