A Gradescope alternative where the AI goes first
If you are looking for a Gradescope alternative, GradeOptics keeps the steps your course already knows and has the AI do each one first, so you check finished work instead of starting from a blank page.
The steps you already know
An assignment in GradeOptics is set up and graded in steps with short, familiar names: Outline, Scans, Submissions, Rubric, Grading, Review, Regrade Requests, Statistics, and Settings. The rubric comes after the scans, because how the class answered is what refines it.
Outline is laid out like Gradescope's: the question paper on one side with a box over each answer, and the outline beside it with each question's number, title, and points. Courses have a roster, sections, and their own teaching staff.
What the AI does at each step
- Outline: when you press Generate outline, it reads the question paper and the answer key, if you have one, and outlines the questions with their points and boxes. A question the key leaves out gets an answer written by the AI and marked as such, for you to check.
- Scans: one PDF of the whole class is split into students. Pages it is unsure of wait for you instead of being guessed.
- Submissions: each student's name and ID are read from their boxes and matched to the roster.
- Rubric: rubric items are drafted for each question. Once the class is read, similar written answers are grouped and changes to the rubric are proposed for you to accept or dismiss.
- Grading: every answer gets a suggested mark, with the rubric items applied and a short reason. You approve question by question or student by student.
- Review: approved grades are published to students or exported as a CSV file.
What changes when you switch
Gradescope's AI-assisted grading suggests groups of similar answers for some question types, so you grade each group once. GradeOptics groups answers as well, and also suggests a mark for every answer from your rubric before you open it, with the reason the mark was given.
When you change a rubric item, every answer it affects is graded again by itself, and no approved grade changes without you seeing it.
You stay in charge of every grade
A suggested mark is never a grade. Nothing reaches a student until someone on the course staff approves it, and each mark records who gave it: the AI, you, or a named grader. Students see only approved grades, their own graded exam, and a way to ask for a regrade, which you answer in one place.
Moving a course over
There is nothing to convert. Upload the question paper and answer key you already have, the roster as a CSV file, and the scans as one PDF. See how GradeOptics grades handwritten exams for each step in detail.
